Current thesis

Korean power-equipment demand is said to rest on three pools that would survive a slowdown in AI capital spending: replacement of ageing grid assets, connection of renewable generation, and new data-centre load. The claim is falsifiable. Our reading is that the three are not three additive order books — one substation upgrade can serve several purposes — and that they have different payers, procurement cycles and cancellation behaviour, so they would not thin together.

The replacement pool has an origin independent of AI. HD Hyundai Electric's 2 July 2026 disclosure is a maximum-amount framework agreement of KRW 1,121.2 billion — 27.5% of 2025 consolidated revenue — running to 1 January 2029, with its own US affiliate as counterparty and purchase orders to be concluded separately in instalments. Reducing an order of that shape requires no cancellation, only fewer instalments. The company's own projection puts the data-centre share of power-segment new orders rising from 6.3% this year to 16% next year, which is a flow, not a stock, and says nothing about how much of the existing backlog is AI-contingent.
